Choosing to Perish When There's Pressure to Publish: The Broader Impacts of Slow Science

Allyson Snyder

Abstract: The demands for the quantity of publications continue to increase in hiring and promoting faculty in the social sciences.1, 2 These trends have contributed to the idea of “publish or perish” which puts pressure on scholars to prioritize publication over other aspects of scholarship. When scientists perceive scholarly success as more closely tied to quantity rather than quality, issues such as the replication crisis emerge.3

Graduate student Allyson Snyder will present on her approach to what she sees as a tension between the benefits of "slow science" and the risk of academically perishing. She will illustrate this tension by discussing her own experience with developing a community partnership to build broader impacts into her research design and collect data from a hard-to-reach population.

Conversation will follow this presentation. Topics include the risks and benefits of slow science, the possibility of heightened productivity alongside novel open science practices, and what, if any, responsibility scientists have in promoting public scientific literacy.

The series: The Department of Communication Brown Bag Series is a regular meeting for developments in Communication and related disciplines, hosted by the UC Davis Department of Communication. It is held at noon on most Thursdays during the academic year.
